TV ISERNIA VISITS PRINCETON
October 2008

A trio from Isernia, headed by well-known Italian journalist, Pasquale Damiani, visited Princeton in mid-October. Their objective was to interview and film various Italian-Americans and discuss their activities and relationship to the “Gemellagio” since its conception.

The five-day visit started with lunch at the Nassau Club with president of the Princeton/Pettoranello Sister City Foundation, Eleanor Pinelli, and former presidents, Nicholas Carnevale, Cate Litvack, Antonio Pirone, Hugo Rossi, and Domenick Tamasi. The rest of the week included visits to Dorothea’s House; Princeton Township Municipal Building with Mayor Phyllis Marchand; a meeting with ex senator Peter Inverso and Maurice Perilli at Roma Bank in Robbinsville; a tour of the Princeton Public Library by its director, Leslie Berger, who pointed out the contributions that the Sister City Foundation has made to the Italian collection of books and films as well as to the creation of the World Study Center located on the second floor.

At the Princeton Italian-American Sportsmen’s Club an interview was held with club president, Ralph Pirone, followed by interviews with Dr. Robert Freda and Cav. Richard Bilotti concerning the Italian Heritage Commission of New Jersey.

A highlight of their visit was the filming of the volunteer workers at Pettoranello Gardens on Sunday morning and then on Monday afternoon, tasting some wonderful desserts chez Ellen Stark who was hosting “le Donne del caffe del lunedi”.

What were their impressions of Princeton? Mr. Damiani compared our town to a small version of Switzerland and all three said that could live here tomorrow if possible, but would certainly come again for a vacation. They also expressed their surprise and delight at the unity of the Italian-Americans in Princeton, their efforts in promoting Italian heritage and culture, and their continued bond with their sister city in Molise, Italy.
