BUILDING THE FUTURE…
HONORING THE PAST

Community service
Pettoranello Gardens is a park beautification volunteer project of the Princeton/Pettoranello Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in recognition of the contributions by Americans of Italian descent to the quality of life in Princeton, NJ. The Foundation’s motto is to “Provide enduring Community Service”.

The site of Pettoranello Gardens located in Community Park North was once an overgrown neglected park. With years of work from volunteers and with total cooperation from the Princeton Recreation Department and the Department of Public Works, this 13- acre property today is a beautiful park enjoyed by many residents of Princeton and the surrounding area. The Foundation received the Community Recognition Award of the Princeton Task Force on Ethics and it won the NJ Park Association Award.

FUTURE SUCCESS

The Gardens

In 1992, the Foundation established Pettoranello Gardens,
a 13- acre section of Community Park North. The idea of Gardens seemed very appropriate because the majority of the first and second waves of immigrants from Pettoranello were excellent gardeners for Princeton University, Taylor Pyne Estate, and for many private families in Princeton.

Once a seedy, overgrown parcel of land, the Pettoranello Gardens are maintained by Foundation donors and a team of volunteers drawn from the Trustees, their family and friends with special help from the Princeton Recreation Department, Princeton Township Public Works, and Princeton High School‘s community service club. This oasis of calm and delight, with its beautifully situated amphitheatre, is host to many outdoor performances and town events.

STEWARDSHIP OF PETTORANELLO GARDENS

The centerpiece of our work in the community is the Foundation’s ongoing beautification project of Pettoranello Gardens in Community Park North. On Sunday mornings, a core of hard-working volunteers goes about its business of improving and maintaining this special spot. Who are these miracle workers? Many are friends and Trustees of the Foundation. Working alongside these veteran gardeners, is a group of no fewer than 10, but often more than 20, students belonging to the Pettoranello Gardens Club at Princeton High School. Additionally, staff from the Princeton Recreation Department and Princeton Public Works works very closely and willingly with the volunteers. It is truly a total community effort to maintain this beautiful oasis of calm and delight for the enjoyment of all.
